Leitão is one of the most beloved Portuguese dishes. This roast suckling pig is prepared with a traditional seasoning of garlic, salt and pepper, then slow-roasted in a wood-fired oven until the skin becomes crispy and golden. You can eat leitao everywhere in Portugal, but the most renowned place to do so is in Mealhada, a short drive between Aveiro and Coimbra. Here, a huge number leitao restaurants line the main road. We filmed at the family-owned Pic-Nic dos Leitaos, where the queues were already forming shortly before noon – so get there early, it’s worth it!
